County Jail TDOC Release Paths

Tennessee can house a state-sentenced felon in a county jail even though TDOC controls or tracks the sentence. Physical location and legal jurisdiction are therefore separate facts. Henderson County’s monthly jail row has included TDOC backup and local sentenced categories alongside pretrial detainees. That mix makes a building departure hard to interpret without the disposition. It can be a release to the community, a transfer to a TDOC institution, movement to another county, or delivery to a different authority.

The sending jail records the actual exit from its building. TDOC records the state sentence, calculation, placement, supervision, and final discharge within its jurisdiction. A person can disappear from a county's current-custody presentation and still remain incarcerated elsewhere. The correct statement is “left the sending county jail” until the local movement entry and statewide status establish what happened next.

Confirm County Jail TDOC Release

Start with the jail that physically held the person. For a Henderson placement, call the official Lexington Sheriff’s Department and identify the specific booking or state-sentence placement. Ask for the actual movement time, release disposition, releasing authority, and receiving agency. A “not here” answer proves only that the person is no longer in that building. It does not distinguish a TDOC transport from community release.

Then open TDOC Felony Offender Information Lookup. FOIL covers felony offenders currently or formerly in TDOC custody or supervision. Search by name, TDOC ID, or State ID Number when known. Compare identity and offense details, then read Supervision Status, Assigned Location, active sentences, Release Eligibility Date, Sentence End Date, and parole information exactly as displayed.

1. Identify the county jail and the state sentence tied to the placement.
2. Request the local exit time, disposition, and receiving authority.
3. Search FOIL with a state identifier when one is available.
4. Compare the assigned location and status with the jail’s destination.
5. Request records from both custodians if the entries do not match.

County Jail TDOC Records

The local jail and TDOC hold different parts of the evidence. Ask the county sheriff for the jail register, booking or placement entry, admission and movement timestamps, release disposition, destination, commitment or release order, and property-return receipt when relevant. The Tennessee county retention schedule treats the jail register as permanent and includes dates committed and released. Booking and movement records have a five-year retention period.

For the state side, request the release authorization, sentence computation, final movement, discharge certificate, supervision certificate, and detainer disposition that are public. TDOC’s archived-record route asks for identifying details. Use the current secure form. Keep a Social Security number or date of birth out of public correspondence except where the official process requires it privately.

TDOC Policy 511.03 describes staff checks for the release date, sentence computation, authorizing papers, new or unprocessed sentences, and detainers. A formal release packet therefore answers questions that a single FOIL field cannot. Ask for an estimate before any chargeable records work begins.

Note: route the physical movement request to the jail and the felony sentence request to TDOC so each custodian answers for its own record.

Henderson TDOC Hold Context

No separate facility named “County Jails Holding TDOC-Sentenced Offenders” exists at one address. It is a statewide placement category. A state-sentenced person can be physically housed in a local jail while TDOC maintains the sentence record. For Henderson County, the relevant local contact is the Sheriff’s Department at 170 Justice Center Drive, Lexington, TN 38351, (731) 968-7777. The office lists weekday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while the station is open around the clock.

Henderson County describes its local jail as an approximately 216-bed facility. TDOC’s January 2025 snapshot counted 210 people against 216 beds and separated pretrial, local sentenced, and TDOC-related categories. The snapshot supports the mixed-custody point. It is not a list of state-sentenced people, a release count, an average stay, or proof that a named person was present.

Read TDOC Release Status

FOIL status terms must stay literal. Incarcerated means state custody is active, though the assigned location may be a local placement. Parole means release from prison into conditional TDOC supervision. Probation describes court-ordered community supervision and does not by itself prove a prior prison release. Inactive should be reported as shown and compared with release and sentence fields rather than translated automatically into sentence completion.

Release Eligibility Date is not a projected door-opening date. It is an eligibility point under the sentence calculation and governing law. A Board decision, approved release plan, detainer, added sentence, corrected judgment, or credit change can alter the path after that date. Sentence End Date is another milestone. The actual county movement record or TDOC release authorization proves the physical event.

County Jail TDOC Fallbacks

If the local and state records disagree, check the court judgment. The Henderson County Circuit and General Sessions Court Clerk can provide public judgments, sentencing orders, jail-credit entries, probation orders, revocation decisions, and other docket materials. The judgment identifies what the court imposed. TDOC’s computation shows how the state applied it. The jail movement log shows where the person physically went.

Tennessee VINE may issue a custody-change notice for a participating county or TDOC event. It is a useful alert, not a certified release log. The reporting agency in the result controls which custody changed. If a VINE result says released while FOIL says incarcerated, contact both agencies and record their exact terms. The event may reflect a local-to-state movement rather than conflicting facts.

A transfer outside the Tennessee state system requires a different locator. Use BOP only for a federal sentenced-prisoner path and ICE ODLS only for current or recent immigration detention.
